<b>This is a Guest Post By :Prayas klushrestha</b><br /> Ok guyz,<br /> Today we are going to figure out very important and amazing threat which is exists inside the windows NTFS system.<br /> Here I am talking about alternate data stream or also knows as ADS which is very big threat for windows environment and also exist inside the window.<br /> So the ADS was added to NTFS file system to support the old Macintosh hierarchical file system (HFS) like ADS is present in win NT,2000,xp , win7 etc.<br /> The main goal of the ADS inside NTFS SYSTEM is to uses resource forks to store icons and other information for a particular file but it can be used by other purpose too which is not desirable at the point of security perspective.<br /> <b><br /> So what is the problem with the ADS ?and why it is can be dangerous or consider as a big threat for windows security?</b><br /> <br /> so let me explain you , using ADS we can easily hide the data or we can say file which cannot easily detected by the security professional or administrator. A malicious person can easily use this loop hole to hide malware or other secretes massage inside the file using ADS. The synchronization is vulnerable to attack; this is probably the most common attack used today. The synchronization or handshake, process initiates a TCP connection. This handshake is particularly vulnerable to a DoS attack referred to as the TCP SYN Flood attack. The process is also susceptible to access and modification attacks, which are briefly explained in the following sections.<br /> <b style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /> TCP SYN or TCP ACK Flood Attack</b> - This attack is very common... The purpose of this attack is to deny service. The attack begins as a normal TCP connection: the client and the server exchange information in TCP packets. The TCP client continues to send ACK packets to the server, these ACK packets tells the server that a connection is requested. The server thus responds to the client with a ACK packet, the client is supposed to respond with another packet accepting the connection to establish the session. In this attack the client continually send and receives the ACK packets but it does not open the session. The server holds these sessions open, awaiting the final packet in the sequence. This cause the server to fill up the available connections and denies any requesting clients access.<br /> <b style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /> TCP Sequence Number Attack </b>- This is when the attacker takes control of one end of a TCP session. The goal of this attack is to kick the attacked end of the network<br /> for the duration of the session. Only then will the attack be successful. Each time a TCP message is sent the client or the server generates a sequence number. The attacker intercepts and then responds with a sequence number similar to the one used in the original session. This attack can then hijack or disrupt a session. If a valid sequence number is guessed the attacker can place himself between the client and the server. The attacker gains the connection and the data from the legitimate system. The only defense of such an attack is to know that its occurring... There is little that can be done...<br /> <b style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /> TCP Hijacking</b> - This is also called active sniffing, it involves the attacker gaining access to a host in the network and logically disconnecting it from the network. The attacker then inserts another machine with the same IP address. This happens quickly and gives the attacker access to the session and to all the information on the original system.<br /> <br /> UDP packets aren't connection oriented and don't require the synchronization process as with TCP. UDP packets, however, are susceptible to interception, thus it can be attacked. UDP, like TCP, doesn't check the validity of an IP address. The nature of this layer is to trust the layer above it (I'm referring to the IP layer). The most common UDP attacks involve UDP flooding. UDP flooding overloads services, networks, and servers. Large streams of UDP packets are focused at a target, causing UDP services on that host to shut down. It can also overload the network and cause a DoS situation to occur.<br /> <b style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /> ICMP Attacks </b>- This occur by triggering a response from the ICMP protocol when it responds to a seemingly legitimate request (think of it as echoing). Ping for instance, that uses the ICMP protocol. sPing is a good example of this type of attack, it overloads te server with more bytes than it can handle, larger connections. Its ping flood.<br /> <b style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /> Smurf Attacks</b> - This attack uses IP spoofing and broadcasting to send a ping to a group of hosts on a network. When a host is pinged it send back ICMP message traffic information indicating status to the originator. If a broadcast is sent to network, all hosts will answer back to the ping. The result is an overload of network and the target system. The only way to prevent this attack is to prohibit ICMP traffic on the router.<br /> <b style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /> ICMP Tunneling </b>- ICMP can contain data about timing and routes. A packet can be used to hold information that is different from the intended information. This allows an ICMP packet to be used as a communications channel between two systems. The channel can be used to send a Trojan horse or other malicious packet. These days companies hire me to break into their systems to find their security vulnerabilities. I don't know if I could compromise the New York Times network, but I think it's likely. Of course, I would only do it with authorization.<br /> <br /> Q. -Your first crime involved fake bus transfers. Do you think if somebody had cracked down on you earlier, your life might have gone a different way?<br /> <br /> Ans . -I think it goes back to my high school days. In computer class, the first assignment was to write a program to print the first 100 Fibonacci numbers. Instead, I wrote a program that would steal passwords of students. My teacher gave me an A.<br /> <br /> Q. -What made you a good hacker was less the coding skills and more the social-engineering skills. What were they?<br /> <br /> Ans .-Social engineering is using deception, manipulation and influence to convince a human who has access to a computer system to do something, like click on an attachment in an e-mail. Most of the computer compromises that we hear about use a technique called spear phishing, which allows an attacker access to a key person's workstation. It's extremely difficult to defend against.<br /> <br /> Q. -Has social networking changed hacking?<br /> <br /> Ans - Made it easier. I can go into LinkedIn and search for network engineers and come up with a list of great spear-phishing targets because they usually have administrator rights over the network. Then I go onto Twitter or Facebook and trick them into doing something, and I have privileged access. If I know you love Angry Birds, maybe I would send you an e-mail purporting to be from Angry Birds with a new pro version. Once you download it, I could have complete access to everything on your phone.<br /> <br /> Q. - How easy was it for those tabloid reporters to hack into celebrities' phones?<br /> <br /> Ans . -This kind of boggles my mind. A lot of the cellular operators would create a default PIN for people's voice mail as 1111 or 1234. It doesn't take a hacker to guess a PIN like that.<br /> <br /> Q. -What is the perfect PIN then?<br /> <br /> Ans .-The perfect PIN is not four digits and not associated with your life, like an old telephone number. It's something easy for you to remember and hard for other people to guess.<br /> <br /> Q. -What do you think of people like Julian Assange and the WikiLeaks crowd?<br /> <br /> Ans -It's more Bradley Manning who was responsible for all of that. Here's an enlisted guy who's able to dump secret documents from SIPRNet to CDs. It is a huge security failure on the part of the U.S. government--the worst that I know of.<br /> <br /> Q. -Which of your hacks are you most proud of?<br /> <br /> Ans. - I think when I hacked into Pac Bell Cellular to do traffic analysis on the FBI agents who were tasked with capturing me--not for hacking into Pac Bell but for how I leveraged that information to stay one step ahead of the government.<br /> <br /> Q. -You used Money's rankings of the 10 most livable cities to find places to hide. Should the FBI monitor that list?<br /> <br /> Ans .-No, it was just allowing Money to randomize my choice. If I had my own choice, somebody might have figured it out.<br /> <br /> Q. - You served five years. How do hackers get treated in prison?<br /> <br /> Ans -Pretty well. A Colombian drug dealer offered me $5 million to hack into the Bureau of Prisons network to get him an early release date. I said, "Let's talk."
